Focusing on excellence in research, this award is given annually to a doctoral student in Criminology, Law and Society. The award is named in honor of Professor Emeritus Gilbert Geis, a major figure in the field of criminology and criminal justice, and a UCI faculty member for over three decades. As a highly prolific scholar with hundreds of publications, he was the recipient of numerous university, national, and international awards, and served as a major professional mentor to both students and faculty. Throughout a highly distinguished career, he exemplified excellence in research at all levels.
