This annual award is granted in recognition of outstanding service contributions by a doctoral student. Named in honor of Professor Emeritus Arnold Binder, who founded the CLS program in Social Ecology in 1970 and played a role in all stages of its development, the award commemorates all the major successes up until his retirement. He served as the Program’s first Director, as well as the first Coordinator and Department Chair of Criminology, Law and Society. A highly respected scholar and strong advocate of the UC system of shared governance, he served as both Chair of the Irvine Division of the Academic Senate, and as Chair of the UC Senate, the highest elected faculty position at the University of California.
