Rodríguez named ASC Fellow

Nancy Rodríguez

Honor recognizes professor’s contributions to criminology

Nancy Rodríguez, professor of criminology, law and society, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology (ASC).

The designation recognizes the professor’s scholarly contributions to criminology and distinction in the discipline.

“The American Society of Criminology has been my intellectual home since I began attending the annual meetings as a graduate student,” Rodríguez says. “This recognition is a result of the many discussions I’ve had with criminologists who inspire me and have supported my development as a scholar.”

The ASC honor is not the first for Rodríguez. She was recognized for her extensive research about inequality and the collateral consequences of mass incarceration, with the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award from the ASC’s Division on People of Color and Crime (DPCC).

Professor Rodríguez, who joined the UCI faculty in 2017, has collaborated with law enforcement, courts and correctional agencies which aided in her appointment by President Obama as the director of the National Institute of Justice from 2015-2017.

She has published impactful research about people of color and crime in top tier journals in the fields of criminology and criminal justice.

Before joining UCI, she worked at Arizona State University as a professor and associate dean for student engagement in the College of Public Programs. Her areas of research specialization are race, crime and justice, juvenile justice and collateral consequences of incarceration.

Her research has garnered support in the form of grants totaling more than $4.5 million.
