UCI has placed first in Sierra magazine’s eighth annual ranking of the country’s “Coolest Schools,” marking the fifth consecutive year the university has been included among the top 10 “greenest” campuses nationwide. In 2008, UCI pledged to improve its energy efficiency by 20 percent by 2020, then reached this goal seven years early. Examples of UCI's sustainability efforts include three on-site solar power projects and a 19-megawatt cogeneration plant with turbines powered by combustion and steam. The school's water-recycling program saves more than 210 million gallons per year.
