Immigration detentions spark national debate

February 2017

Charis Kubrin, Professor of Criminology, Law and Society, is quoted in El Paso Times for identifying the issues with National Border Patrol Council's vice president for media relations Shawn Moran's statement that "immigration officers are finally able to do their jobs as it is written in law." In this article, she gives insight as to how the Trump administration has only expanded the group of people that are deemed deportable.

From El Paso Times:

A criminologist who studies crime in immigrant communities said Moran’s statement is misguided.

“There is a false reading among some ICE officers that Obama was lenient and let all of these people into the country,” said Charis E. Kubrin of the University of California, Irvine. “There’s this false perception that they’re finally getting to do their jobs.”

Kubrin said that immigration agents seem to be forgetting that Obama was known among immigration advocates as “the deporter in chief.”
