Rap music still divides scholars, some of whom don't treat it as a true art form and don't take it seriously.
Charis Kubrin, a professor of criminology, law and society, was discouraged from studying rap lyrics in her dissertation in the 1990s, she told The Chronicle of Higher Education. She did eventually return to studying rap lyrics, spending eight years collecting and analyzing them.
